Convert Excel to PDF, CSV or TSV
Drop workbooks on Octoolo's spreadsheet converter and choose what they should become: a PDF with every sheet on its own pages, an .xlsx, a CSV or a TSV of the first sheet, or a web page. It reads and writes with the same code as the Spreadsheets editor, on your own computer.
How to convert Excel to PDF
- 1
Open Convert spreadsheets
Open Converters from Octoolo's home screen and pick Convert spreadsheets.
- 2
Drop the workbooks in
Drag .xlsx, .csv or .tsv files onto Drop spreadsheets here, or click it and choose them.
- 3
Pick the format
Under Convert to, choose PDF, every sheet. The other choices are Excel workbook, CSV, first sheet, Tab-separated, first sheet and Web page, every sheet.
- 4
Convert and save
Press Convert to PDF, then Save on each row or Save all as ZIP.
How the PDF is laid out
Each sheet of the workbook starts on a new page, under a small heading with the sheet's name, with its cells as a table: the values and the results of formulas, in the number formats, bold and colors the sheet uses. Octoolo writes the PDF itself, with no printer dialog.
The pages are Letter when Windows runs in US or Canadian English and A4 otherwise, with half-inch margins. When any sheet in the workbook is wider than six columns, every page is turned sideways so wide tables have room; narrow workbooks stay upright. Very wide sheets still wrap onto further pages. Charts, pictures and pivot tables are not drawn, since the Spreadsheets editor does not read them.
CSV, TSV and XLSX
The same converter changes spreadsheets between formats:
- To XLSX: a CSV or TSV becomes a workbook with one sheet, its numbers, dates and amounts turned into real values, as CSV to XLSX explains. An .xlsx keeps its formulas, formats, bold and colors.
- To CSV or TSV: the first sheet's values, one row per line, with a byte-order mark so Excel reads accents correctly. Formulas are written as their results. Other sheets are left out; for one in particular, open the workbook in Spreadsheets and save that sheet.
- To HTML: every sheet as a table on one web page, for pasting into a site or an email.
A TSV is read by treating its tabs as separators; a .txt file is read the same way as a CSV.
Many workbooks at once
Month-end reports, exports from a system, a year of statements: drop them all in and every one converts with the same setting. Each row shows the result's size or, if a file could not be read, why. Save all as ZIP writes the PDFs into one archive named after the files. The originals are never touched.
For a single sheet you are working on, Save as PDF… (Ctrl P) in Spreadsheets writes just that sheet.

Questions, answered
Does the PDF include every sheet?
Yes, each on its own pages, with the sheet's name as a heading. Hidden sheets are included too.
Why are the pages sideways?
Because a sheet in the workbook has more than six columns. Every page is then landscape so the table fits; workbooks with narrow sheets print upright.
Are formulas kept?
In an .xlsx, yes. In CSV, TSV, PDF and HTML the results are written, since those formats have no formulas.
Which sheet goes into the CSV?
The first one. Save another sheet from the Spreadsheets editor, which writes the sheet you are on.
Can it convert .xls files?
No. Save old .xls files as .xlsx in Excel first.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything is read and written on your computer.
