Media Player · Windows 10 and 11
A media player that opens almost anything
Drop in a film, a folder of songs or a phone video and it plays: what Windows decodes plays as it is, and FFmpeg makes the rest playable while you watch, on your graphics card. Subtitles, sound tracks, chapters, speed and a playlist are all there, and it offers to continue where you stopped.
What you can do in the Media Player
Videos
A dark screen whose controls fade while you watch. MKV files keep their picture as it is and let you pick the language; AVI, WMV and FLV and HEVC that your PC cannot decode are converted to H.264 as they play, with nothing written to the disk. Subtitles load by themselves from a file beside the video or from the video itself, in the size, place and timing you set.
- Speed from 0.25× to 4× with the pitch kept, and volume up to 200%.
- Chapters, repeat a part from A to B, and save any frame as a picture.
- Full screen, picture in picture, and keeping the window on top.
- The keys you know from YouTube and VLC: see the video player.
Music
Drop a folder and every song in it, and in the folders below, becomes a playlist. Songs show their cover, title, artist and album; shuffle and repeat one or all are on the bar. FLAC plays as it is, and Apple Lossless, APE and WavPack stay lossless as they play. See the music player.
Compared with VLC
For playing files on your PC, it covers what most people use VLC for. VLC also plays streams and discs, shows picture subtitles and has an equalizer: the VLC alternative page sets out the differences.
