A video player for your PC

Drop a video in and it plays on a dark screen whose controls fade away while you watch. The keys you know from YouTube and VLC work, the speed goes from a quarter to four times, and the next time you open a film it offers to continue where you stopped.

How to play a video

  1. 1

    Open the Media Player

Open Media Player from Octoolo's home, or search for “video player”.

  2. 2

    Drop videos in

Drag one video, several or a folder onto the window, or press Open files (Ctrl O). Several files make a playlist on the right.

  3. 3

    Watch

Click the picture to pause, double-click for full screen, move the mouse to bring the controls back.

Made for watching

  • Full screen with a double-click or F; Esc leaves it.
  • Picture in picture keeps the video in a small window over your other apps; Keep the window on top does the same with the whole player.
  • Speed from 0.25× to 4× with voices at their own pitch, for lectures and tutorials.
  • Volume up to 200% for films that were mixed too quiet.
  • Repeat a part from a point A to a point B, for learning a dance or a guitar part.
  • Save this frame as a picture (S): a PNG at the video's full size. For many stills at once, see extract frames from a video.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Space or K: play and pause.
  • ← →: 5 seconds back or forward; J L: 10 seconds.
  • ↑ ↓: volume; M: mute.
  • [ ]: slower or faster.
  • N P: next or previous file; 0 to 9: jump to 0%, 10%... 90%.
  • C: subtitles on or off; F: full screen; S: save the frame.

Picks up where you stopped

Stop a film halfway and close Octoolo: the next time you open that file, the player offers Continue from the minute you left. When nothing is playing, the player lists the files you played last, with how far you got in each, so a series is one click away. Positions are kept for files longer than two minutes, on your computer only.

It plays nearly every kind of file: see MKV, AVI and WMV and HEVC.

Questions, answered

Which video files does it play?

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, ASF, FLV, MPEG, TS, M2TS, MTS, VOB, 3GP and nearly anything else FFmpeg reads.

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. After FFmpeg's one-time download, everything plays offline.

Is there a playlist?

Yes. Several files or a folder make a playlist beside the video: drag to reorder, × to remove, shuffle and repeat.

Does it slow my PC down?

Files Windows decodes play the way a browser plays them. Files that are converted as they play use the graphics card's encoder when there is one, so the processor stays mostly free.
