Password-protect a ZIP file

Windows can zip a folder, but it cannot put a password on it. Octoolo locks ZIP files with AES-256, the encryption 7-Zip and WinZip use, so the files inside open only with the password.

How to put a password on a ZIP

  1. 1

    Choose the files

In Files, press Choose files… or A folder… under Compress, or drop them on that box. From File Explorer, right-click them and choose Octoolo, then Compress….

  2. 2

    Add the password

Turn on Add a password, type the password, and type it again. The button waits until the two match.

  3. 3

    Compress

Press Compress to ZIP. Send the ZIP and the password by different routes, for example the file by email and the password by text message.

What the password protects, and what it does not

In a ZIP, the password locks what is in each file. The list of names stays readable: anyone can see that the ZIP holds Tax return 2025.pdf, but not open it. If the names themselves give too much away, make a 7Z instead: with a password, 7Z encrypts the names too, and without it nobody can even list the contents. See make a 7Z file.

The password is not stored anywhere. Octoolo cannot recover it, and neither can anyone else: if it is lost, so are the files. A long passphrase of several words is both easier to remember and harder to guess than a short tangle of symbols; Octoolo's password generator makes either.

Who can open it

ProgramAES-256 ZIP
Octoolo, 7-Zip, WinRAR, WinZipOpens, with the password
Windows File ExplorerCannot open AES-locked ZIPs
macOS Archive UtilityCannot open AES-locked ZIPs

The older ZipCrypto lock, which Explorer can open, is easily broken, so Octoolo does not make it. It does open ZipCrypto ZIPs others send you, as it opens AES ones: see unzip files.

A password ZIP or a locked file?

A ZIP with a password is for sending: whoever gets it opens it with any archiver that reads AES. To keep files private on your own PC, the Lock door in Files is the better fit: a file or folder becomes one locked file that hides the names too, and the original goes once the locked file checks out. See lock a folder and password-protect a file.

Questions, answered

Can I add a password to a ZIP I already have?

Extract it, then compress those files again with Add a password on.

Is AES-256 safe?

The encryption is strong; the weak point is the password. Use a long one that is not used anywhere else.

I forgot the password. Can Octoolo open it?

No. Nothing stores the password, so there is no way around it.

Why can my friend not open it with a double-click?

File Explorer cannot open ZIPs locked with AES. They need 7-Zip, WinRAR, WinZip or Octoolo.
