Convert pictures to JPG, PNG or WebP

Drop the pictures you meet on a PC into Octoolo's Convert image and save them as the formats websites, apps and printers take: JPG, PNG or WebP. One picture shows the original and the result side by side; a whole set converts with the same settings and saves as a ZIP. The picture never leaves your computer.

How to convert an image

  1. 1

    Open Convert image

Open Converters from Octoolo's home screen and pick Convert image. (The Photo Editor's start page has the same tool as Convert pictures.)

  2. 2

    Drop the pictures in

Drag one picture or many onto the window, or press Choose pictures. One picture appears beside its result; several are listed with their sizes.

  3. 3

    Pick the format

Set Format to PNG, JPG or WebP; Same keeps a JPG a JPG and a WebP a WebP. For JPG and WebP, set the Quality (10 to 100). The result's pixel size, file size and the change in percent show at once.

  4. 4

    Save the copies

Press Save PNG (or JPG, or WebP) for one picture, or Save on each row and Save all as ZIP for a set. The originals are left as they were.

What goes in, and what comes out

Convert image reads the formats you are likely to meet on a Windows PC and writes the ones that work almost anywhere. SVG and PSD files are the two that open in the Photo Editor instead, which exports them the same way.

OpensGood to know
JPG, JPEG and JFIFPhone and camera photos are turned upright as they open.
PNGTransparent parts come along.
WebP and AVIFThe formats many websites send to browsers.
GIFAn animated GIF opens at its first frame.
BMPOld Windows bitmaps.
SVGNot here: SVG to PNG draws it at any width, and the Photo Editor opens it at 2,000 pixels or more.
PSDNot here: Photoshop files open in the Photo Editor with their layers, groups, masks and text, and export from there.

Whatever goes in, the copy you save is a JPG, a PNG or a WebP (the Photo Editor's Export adds PSD). Octoolo does not write AVIF, GIF, BMP or TIFF files. TIFF, and HEIC, the format iPhones take photos in, do not open yet; trying one shows a short note that lists the formats that do.

Which format to save in

The right kind of file depends on what the picture is and where it is going:

  • JPG for photos you email, print or upload. It is small and every device opens it, but it has no transparency, and at lower quality it softens hard edges a little.
  • PNG for screenshots, diagrams, logos and anything with text or a see-through background. It keeps every pixel, which makes it bigger for photos.
  • WebP for pictures on a website. It looks like a JPG at a smaller size and can keep transparency, but some older programs and upload forms still refuse it.
  • PSD for handing layered work to someone who uses Photoshop.

Most conversions people look for are one of a handful of jobs, each with its own page: WebP to PNG and WebP to JPG for pictures saved from the web, PNG to JPG to shrink screenshots and photos, SVG to PNG for logos, and JPG to WebP for people who run websites. Going the other way, from a picture to a vector SVG, is tracing rather than converting: see PNG to SVG.

Two ways to convert in Octoolo

Convert image, in Converters and on the Photo Editor's start page as Convert pictures, is the quick way: a format, a quality, and the picture or the whole set is done. It writes JPG, PNG and WebP, and shows each result's size before you save.

Export. Open the picture in the Photo Editor and press Export. Besides Kind of file, you get Quality from 30 to 100 and a Size list: the full size, or a width of 3840, 2560, 2048, 1920, 1600, 1280, 1080, 800 or 512 pixels when the picture is wider than that, and a W box for any other. For JPG, See-through parts become sets the color behind clear areas, white at first. Use it when you also want to crop, straighten or brighten the picture on the way, and for SVG and PSD files.

File › Many pictures at once…, Convert. Also on the start page as Convert pictures. Drop one picture and it shows the original and the result side by side, each with its pixel size and exact file size, plus the change in percent; drop several and the same settings apply to all, with Save on each row and Save all as ZIP for the lot. The same tool is Convert image in Converters. Format offers Same, PNG, JPG and WebP. Same leaves a JPG as JPG and a WebP as WebP, and turns anything else into a PNG. Quality runs from 10 to 100, and see-through parts of a JPG come out white.

Export remembers the kind of file and the quality you used last, so a run of conversions to the same format needs only Save each time.

What every exported copy leaves behind

Octoolo draws the picture again and writes a brand-new file, which has a few side effects worth knowing:

  • The place, the camera and the date a photo carries (its EXIF and GPS details) are not written into the copy. That makes it safer to post, and it is also how Octoolo removes metadata from photos.
  • A phone photo that only looked upright because of a rotation tag is turned for real, so it stays upright in every program.
  • The file you opened is never changed. You name the copy and choose its folder in the Windows Save window.

All of it happens on your PC, with or without an internet connection.

Questions, answered

Can it convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

No: HEIC files do not open in Octoolo. An iPhone can take new photos as JPG instead if you choose Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats.

Can I convert a whole folder of images at once?

Yes, as many as you drop: in Convert pictures (File › Many pictures at once…, or Convert image in Converters) the same format and quality apply to every one, each row has Save, and Save all as ZIP saves them together.

Does converting lower the quality?

PNG keeps every pixel it is given. JPG and WebP compress at the Quality you choose: around 85 to 90 is hard to tell from the original for most photos, and a WebP at 100 is saved without any loss.

Is there a file size limit?

The Photo Editor opens pictures up to the largest size your graphics card holds, 16,384 pixels a side on most PCs, and says so if a picture is larger. Very large pictures just take a little longer to export.

Are my pictures uploaded to convert them?

No. The Photo Editor converts on your own computer and works offline, so nothing is sent to a server.

Does it change my original file?

No. Exporting always writes a new file where you choose, and the picture you opened stays exactly as it was.
