Unscramble letters into words
Type your letters and the word unscrambler lists every word they make, grouped by length with the longest first. A ? stands for a blank tile. Narrow the list with a first or last letter, a length or letters it must contain, and add Scrabble or Words With Friends letter values to see which word scores most. A Wordle helper sits beside it.
How to unscramble a set of letters
- 1
Open the unscrambler
In Text Studio, press Words, then Unscramble at the top of the panel.
- 2
Type your letters
Put them in Your letters, for example listen, or r?ad with a blank tile. The words appear as you type, longest first.
- 3
Narrow it down
Fill in Starts with, Ends with or Contains, or pick a Length, to see only words that fit a gap on the board.
- 4
Score them
Under Scores, choose Scrabble or Words With Friends. Each word shows its letter values, and the highest come first within each length.
What it finds
The unscrambler checks every word in its list against your letters and keeps those it can spell, using each letter only as many times as you typed it. listen gives 90 words: six of six letters (enlist, inlets, listen, silent, tinsel and elints), then 16 of five letters, 32 of four, and so on down to two.
- Blank tiles. A ? can be any letter; type two for two blanks. r?ad finds bard, card, dare, road and 136 others.
- Filters look at the finished words. To play through a letter already on the board, add it to your letters and put it in Contains.
- Long lists show the first 1,500 words; a length or a filter narrows them down.
Click any word to copy it. The arrow beside it opens its meaning in the thesaurus, handy when the list offers a word you have never seen.
The word list, and why game dictionaries differ
The words come from ENABLE, a public-domain list of 172,820 English words compiled for word games, from two letters up to 28. It includes plurals, verb forms and plenty of rare words, but no names, abbreviations or words with hyphens or apostrophes.
Each game has its own official dictionary, and they do not agree with each other or with ENABLE: some short words are allowed in one and not another, and newer words reach them at different times. So treat a word found here as very likely playable, and check a doubtful one in the game itself before you bet the game on it.
Letter values
The scores are the letters' face values, the blank counting nothing, before any double or triple squares on the board.
| Points | Scrabble | Words With Friends |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A E I L N O R S T U | A E I O R S T |
| 2 | D G | D L N U |
| 3 | B C M P | G H Y |
| 4 | F H V W Y | B C F M P W |
| 5 | K | K V |
| 8 | J X | X |
| 10 | Q Z | J Q Z |
Use the values to compare words that fit the same spot. A four-letter word with a J can outscore a six-letter word made of one-point letters, especially on a triple letter square.
A Wordle helper too
The Wordle tab works from the colors the game gave you. Type each guess and press Add, then click its letters until they match the board: grey for a letter that is not in the word, yellow for one that is in another place, green for one in the right place. Clicking a letter again moves it to the next color.
It then lists the five-letter words that still fit, repeated letters included: if one E in your guess was yellow and the other grey, the answer has exactly one E. Better-known words come first, and among them those with the most common of the remaining letters, so your next guess rules out as many words as possible.
Questions, answered
How do I enter a blank tile?
Type a question mark. ?, * and _ all count as a blank, and each one stands for any single letter.
Can it find anagrams of a word?
Yes. Type the word as your letters and pick its length under Length: what is left are its anagrams, such as silent, tinsel and enlist for listen.
Are the scores the points I will get?
They are the letters' values only. Bonus squares, extra words formed across the board and the bonus for using all seven tiles are added by the game.
Does it need the internet?
No. The word list is on your PC with Octoolo, so it works anywhere, and a search takes a fraction of a second.
Can it solve crosswords?
Partly. If you know some of the letters, put them in your letters with ? for the rest, choose the length and use Starts with or Ends with for the letters you are sure of.
