Sort your Downloads folder by type, with undo

Octoolo puts each download into a folder for its type inside Downloads: Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Archives and Installers. You see what goes where before anything moves, one click puts it all back, and new downloads can be sorted the same way on their own.

How to sort your Downloads folder

  1. 1

    Open Sort your downloads

Open Octoolo's Downloads app and pick Sort your downloads. It shows each folder files would go into, how many and how much, before anything moves.

  2. 2

    Look it over

Press See them on a folder to read the names that go there. Untick a folder to leave those files where they are.

  3. 3

    Sort

Press Sort. The files move into the type folders inside Downloads, which Octoolo makes if they are not there yet. Changed your mind? Undo puts every file back where it was.

  4. 4

    Keep it sorted

Turn on Keep sorting new downloads and choose how old a download should be before it moves: 10 minutes, an hour, a day or a week.

Which folder each file goes to

FolderFor
DocumentsPDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, text, CSV, e-books, web pages
PicturesJPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, SVG, RAW photos, Photoshop files
VideosMP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WebM and other video
MusicMP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG and other sound
ArchivesZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR and GZ files, disk images
InstallersEXE, MSI and app packages

The folders are made inside the folder being sorted, so everything stays under Downloads. When a folder already has a file of the same name, the new one is named “name (2)” rather than replacing it.

What stays where it is

  • Files of no known type, so nothing lands in a folder it does not belong in.
  • Folders, such as what you unzipped.
  • Downloads still arriving: anything changed in the last two minutes, and unfinished browser downloads.
  • Files open in another program, which Windows will not let anyone move. Sort says which ones stayed.

Sorting new downloads on its own

With Keep sorting new downloads on, Octoolo sorts the downloads that arrive from then on while it is open or running in the tray. What was there before stays put until you press Sort yourself.

Each new download waits before it moves, an hour unless you choose otherwise, because your browser's download list still points at the place the file landed: open it from the browser right after downloading and it is still there. Afterwards, Your downloads finds it in its new folder.

Use another folder for downloads too? When there is more than one download folder, Sort lets you tick which ones it sorts.

Questions, answered

Can I undo a sort?

Yes. Undo puts every file of the last sort back where it was and removes the type folders the sort made, if they are empty.

Does sorting delete anything?

No. Sort only moves files into folders inside the same folder, and Undo moves them back.

Will my browser still find a file after it is sorted?

Its download list points at where the file was, so after a sort the browser says the file is gone. That is why new downloads wait before the automatic sort moves them. Your downloads in Octoolo finds them wherever they are.

Can it sort into my Documents and Pictures folders instead?

Not yet. The type folders are made inside the folder being sorted, so your own Documents and Pictures folders stay as they are.
