Convert MP4 to GIF
Turn MP4 clips into GIFs that play in any chat, page or document, or into animated WebP and APNG when you want smaller or full-color files. Pick a preset, drop in one clip or a folder of them, and Octoolo makes the animations on your PC.
How to convert MP4 to GIF
- 1
Go to the converter
Open Converters from Octoolo's home screen and pick Convert video. The first time, Octoolo fetches FFmpeg, a 77 MB download it keeps for good.
- 2
Drop in the clips
Add one MP4 or a folder of them. If any clip runs past 20 seconds, the panel shows the warning “Long videos make very big animated pictures.”
- 3
Go to Animated
Under Convert to, switch the tabs from Video to Animated and pick GIF or WebP. All 3 animated formats shows APNG as well.
- 4
Choose a preset
Balanced suits chats, High documents and pages, Small places with tight size limits. As it is keeps every pixel.
- 5
Convert
Press convert. Each animation is saved beside its MP4, and it loops forever wherever it plays.
MP4 and GIF compared
| Detail | MP4 | GIF |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | MPEG-4 Part 14 | Graphics Interchange Format |
| Holds | Video, sound and subtitles | Silent animation (or one picture) |
| Usual video | H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | At most 256 colors per frame |
| Usual sound | AAC or MP3 | None |
| Plays in | Nearly everything: Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, TVs, browsers, editors and websites | Every browser, chat app and social network |
| Best for | Sharing, uploading and playing anywhere | Short silent loops, reactions and memes |
| Since | 2003, MPEG (based on Apple's QuickTime) | 1987, CompuServe |
The presets, in numbers
| Quality | GIF and APNG | Animated WebP |
|---|---|---|
| As it is | Full size, up to 20 frames a second | Full size, up to 20 frames a second |
| High | 15 frames a second, 540 pixels | 20 frames a second, 720 pixels |
| Balanced | 12 frames a second, 360 pixels | 15 frames a second, 480 pixels |
| Small | 10 frames a second, 240 pixels (GIF: 128 colors) | 12 frames a second, 360 pixels |
The pixel figure is the most the shorter side can have. A 1080p landscape clip at Balanced becomes a 640 × 360 GIF; a vertical phone clip becomes 360 × 640. Small clips are never enlarged. To decide for yourself, More settings has Size, from 240p up to the clip's own, and Frames a second, which can go below the preset but not above it.
GIF, WebP or APNG
- GIF plays everywhere: every browser, chat app and social network. It is limited to 256 colors, so Octoolo builds a palette from each clip, favoring the parts that move, and dithers to smooth out gradients. Only the part of each frame that changes is stored, which keeps still backgrounds cheap.
- Animated WebP has full color and comes out much smaller than a GIF of the same clip, because it compresses each frame the way a photo is compressed, a little lossily, at a level each preset sets. Browsers show it, but some apps and upload forms still accept only GIF.
- APNG is an animated PNG: full color, lossless, and saved with a .png ending. Browsers play it; expect large files.
All three loop forever and carry no sound. If a GIF turns out too heavy, the same clip as WebP is the quickest fix, provided the place you post it takes WebP.
Trim first, or let the editor make it
This converter turns each clip into an animation from start to finish; it does not cut. A GIF of a whole 40-second clip is rarely what anyone wants, so trim long clips first:
- For a single clip, the Video Editor does it all: cut the part you want, add words with the Meme or Caption text style, and choose GIF in Export. Its GIFs are up to 640 pixels wide at up to 15 frames a second. The video to GIF guide shows how.
- For clips that are already short, this converter is the quicker road: one setting for a whole folder, and no timeline.
To shorten an MP4 without making a GIF yet, use the video trimmer, then bring the trimmed clip back here with the rest of the batch.
A folder of clips, one setting
Documentation, product pages and help centers often need dozens of short clips as GIFs. Drop the folder: Octoolo finds the clips, up to 500, and converts them with the preset you chose, each next to its MP4 or all together in a folder you pick. Making an animation encodes every frame afresh, so Octoolo does one clip at a time, and the list shows the progress and time left for each.
Do not be surprised if a GIF ends up bigger than the MP4 it came from: that is normal for GIF. If a batch comes out too heavy, run it again at Small, or as WebP. Octoolo remembers the format and quality you used last, so the next batch of clips starts where this one left off.

Questions, answered
Why is my GIF bigger than the MP4?
GIF stores animation far less efficiently than video does. A smaller preset, fewer frames a second or animated WebP all bring the size down.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIF, WebP and APNG animations have no sound, so it is left out. Keep the MP4 if the sound matters.
Will the GIF loop?
Yes. Every animation Octoolo makes loops forever, the way people expect a GIF to.
Is there a watermark or a length limit?
Neither. Octoolo adds nothing to your animations, and it converts a clip of any length, though anything past about 20 seconds makes a very large file.
Which preset suits Slack, Teams or Discord?
Balanced, which Octoolo itself describes as good for chats: 12 frames a second and 360 pixels keep short clips light. If a service still turns a GIF down for its size, Small cuts it further.
Can I make GIFs from MOV, WebM or MKV clips too?
Yes, from any video FFmpeg reads. MOV to GIF and WebM to GIF cover iPhone clips and screen recordings in more detail.
