Convert Markdown to HTML

Notes, READMEs and drafts written in Markdown become web pages anyone can open in a browser. Drop the .md files on Octoolo and each one is written as an .html file, or as a Word document or a PDF if that is what the reader needs, with nothing sent anywhere.

Press Convert to HTML, then Save on each row or Save all as ZIP.

What Markdown Octoolo understands

The common parts, as GitHub and most editors write them:

  • Headings with # to ######.
  • Bold, italics, strikethrough and inline code.
  • Bulleted and numbered lists, and checklists with - [ ] and - [x].
  • Links and pictures.
  • Tables drawn with |.
  • Quotes with >, fenced code blocks and horizontal rules.

Raw HTML inside the Markdown, footnotes and math are not interpreted. Pictures referenced by a relative path stay as references, so keep the HTML next to the picture files it points to.

The HTML you get

The result is a complete page: a document with a title taken from the file name, the headings as h1 to h6, lists as lists and tables as tables, so it opens in any browser and pastes cleanly into a website's editor. It is the same HTML the Documents editor writes with Save a copy as web page.

Choose Word to get a .docx with the same structure, which is what Markdown to Word does one file at a time in the editor, or PDF for a page that looks the same everywhere. The PDF is written by Octoolo itself on Letter or A4 pages, so that choice runs in the installed app.

Many files at once

Documentation folders, note archives and blog drafts come as dozens of .md files. Select them all and drop them in: each converts with the same setting, its row shows the result's size, and Save all as ZIP writes every page into one archive with the original names and the new extension.

Questions, answered

Does it make a whole page or just a fragment?

A whole page, with a head, a title and a body, ready to open in a browser. Copy the body out if your website editor wants only the inner HTML.

Are my pictures included?

They are linked, not embedded. Keep the HTML in the same folder as the pictures the Markdown points to.

Can I go from HTML back to Markdown?

Yes. Drop the .html file on Convert documents and choose Markdown.

Can it make a PDF from Markdown?

Yes. Choose PDF under Convert to. Octoolo writes the PDF itself, on Letter or A4 pages with one-inch margins.

Does it handle GitHub checklists?

Yes. - [ ] and - [x] become checklist items with their boxes.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Reading and writing happen on your computer, offline.
