GPA calculator
List your courses with their credits and letter grades and the grade point average is there as you type. Add your GPA and credits so far for the cumulative figure, switch on weighting for honors and AP or IB classes, and choose whether an A+ counts as 4.0 or 4.3. Your courses stay on your computer for next time.
How to calculate your GPA
- 1
Open the GPA calculator
In Octoolo's Calculator, choose GPA calculator in the School group. It opens with four example courses.
- 2
Enter your courses
For each course, type a name if you like, its Credits, and pick its Grade. Add a course adds a row; ✕ removes one; Start over clears the list.
- 3
Set your school's rules
Switch on A+ counts as 4.3 if your school does that. For a high school weighted GPA, switch on Weighted and set each course's Level to Regular, Honors, or AP or IB.
- 4
Add earlier terms
Under With earlier terms, type your GPA so far and Credits so far to see the Cumulative GPA.
How a GPA is worked out
Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points, and each course counts as many times as it has credits. Multiply each course's points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. The example the calculator opens with:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 3 | A (4.0) | 12.0 |
| Calculus | 4 | B+ (3.3) | 13.2 |
| Biology | 4 | A− (3.7) | 14.8 |
| History | 3 | B (3.0) | 9.0 |
That is 49 grade points over 14 credits, a GPA of 3.50, which the tool shows with the Credits counted and Grade points beside it. A four-credit course moves the average more than a three-credit one, so a B+ in Calculus costs more than a B in History would gain.
The 4.0 scale, plus and minus grades
Octoolo uses the scale most US colleges and high schools use: A 4.0, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0 and F 0, with a plus adding 0.3 and a minus taking 0.3 away (A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B− 2.7 and so on). There is no A+ above 4.0 unless you switch on A+ counts as 4.3, which some schools use; D− is 0.7.
Courses graded Pass or Withdrawn are left out of the average and their credits are not counted, which matches how most transcripts treat P/NP and W. Schools differ on details, such as an A+ worth 4.33 or repeated courses that replace an old grade, so check your registrar's rules when a decimal matters, for example for a scholarship cut-off.
Cumulative and weighted GPA
A cumulative GPA combines all your terms, weighted by credits. Type your GPA so far and Credits so far from your transcript and the calculator adds this term's courses: with a 3.20 over 60 credits, the example term above brings it to (3.20 × 60 + 49) ÷ 74 = 3.26. Averaging the two GPAs as 3.35 would be wrong, because the earlier terms carry far more credits.
Many high schools also report a weighted GPA, where harder classes count extra: Octoolo adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. The weighting is added to passing grades only; an F stays at 0. With weighting on, the calculator shows the Unweighted GPA beside the weighted one, since colleges often recalculate it their own way. Four one-credit classes, an AP A, an Honors B+, an A− and a B, give 3.88 weighted and 3.50 unweighted.

Questions, answered
What GPA is a B+ average?
3.3 on the usual 4.0 scale. A mix of A and B grades lands between 3.0 and 4.0, depending on the credits of each course.
Does it calculate cumulative GPA?
Yes. Type your GPA so far and the credits it covers under With earlier terms, and the Cumulative GPA includes this term's courses.
Can it do a weighted high school GPA?
Yes. Switch on Weighted and set each course to Regular, Honors (+0.5) or AP or IB (+1). The unweighted GPA is shown beside it.
How are pass/fail classes counted?
Pick Pass (not counted) or Withdrawn (not counted) and the course is left out of the average and the credits. A failed graded course counts as F, 0 points.
Are my courses saved?
Yes, on your computer only, so the list is still there when you come back. Nothing is uploaded.
Does it use a 4.3 or 5.0 scale?
It uses 4.0, with an option for A+ as 4.3. Weighted mode gives AP or IB classes up to 5.0.
